Frequently asked questions about airports and airfields
What is the difference between an airport and an airfield (landing strip)?
A civil airport is entered in the Polish CAA Civil Aerodromes Register and operates under a certificate or permit – usually with richer infrastructure and AIP procedures. An airfield (lądowisko) is listed in the CAA Civil Landing Sites List; formal requirements and facilities are typically simpler. Both support take-offs and landings, but they differ in legal status and the scope of services.
Do I need permission to land at an airfield?
In GA practice, almost always – many airfields require prior permission from the operator or owner (PPR). Before arrival, check AIP, NOTAMs and the site contact details. PilotHub data is informational and does not replace briefing or official sources.
What is the difference between a heliport and a helicopter airfield?
A heliport is mainly for helicopter operations, often with a dedicated pad. A helicopter airfield is a landing site adapted for helicopters (sometimes other aircraft too). On the PilotHub map these types appear separately in the filter and legend, next to regular airports and airfields.
Where does PilotHub get airport data from?
We aggregate data from PANSA eAIP, the CAA Civil Aerodromes Register and Civil Landing Sites List, and community sources. The information is for planning and orientation – always verify it in official publications before flight.
How do I filter sites for aeroplanes vs helicopters?
At the top of the page choose a GA mode: aeroplane (airports and airfields without dedicated helicopter pads), helicopter (heliports, helicopter airfields, plus airports and regular airfields), or all GA. You can further narrow by IFR/VFR, surface, type, source and region.
Are airfields without an ICAO code in the database?
Yes – the list and map also include sites without ICAO, including unregistered airfields. They have their own pages with coordinates and available data. As always: confirm currency in official sources before arrival and obtain any required permission.
